A MOV recording may not open in a particular player, a TV may reject an MKV file, or a website may need WebM. The video format converter runs FFmpeg inside your browser to create a different output format without installing software or uploading the video.
Supported output formats
mp4, mkv, avi, flv, mov, webm, and m4v.
How to convert a video
- Open Video Format Converter and select a video.
- Choose the target Output Format.
- Click Start and wait for processing to finish.
- Click Download. The filename follows
Convert_original-name.new-format.
Choosing a format
Choosing an output format
- MP4: widely supported and a useful default for sharing, uploads, and mobile playback.
- MOV: common in Apple editing workflows.
- MKV: a container capable of holding multiple audio and subtitle tracks, often used for video collections.
- WebM: an open format commonly used for embedded web video.
- AVI: an older format sometimes needed by legacy players and devices.
- FLV: mainly useful when a legacy system specifically requires it.
- M4V: similar to MP4 and commonly associated with Apple media workflows.
If you are unsure, start with MP4. Playback compatibility also depends on the codecs inside the container.
What happens during conversion?
A video file combines a container, such as MP4 or MKV, with codecs, such as H.264 or VP9. This tool reads the source and uses FFmpeg's defaults for the chosen output format to re-encode it.
- Conversion takes time, depending on duration and resolution.
- The output can be larger or smaller than the source.
- A container's ability to hold multiple tracks does not guarantee that all source tracks will be preserved by this conversion workflow.
For direct bitrate control, use Video Compression.
Common conversions
- MOV to MP4: prepare phone recordings for platforms that do not accept MOV.
- MKV to MP4: improve compatibility with a target TV, phone, or editor.
- MP4 to WebM: prepare an alternative source for a website's
video element. - FLV or AVI to MP4: organize older recordings in a widely used format.
Frequently asked questions
Will conversion affect quality?
Re-encoding can lose detail. Check the result, especially if the original has already been heavily compressed.
Why does progress seem stuck?
The FFmpeg core must load on first use, and long or high-resolution videos take time to encode. Click Stop if you need to cancel.
Can I keep only the audio?
Use Extract Audio from Video to export MP3, WAV, or another audio format.
