Test cases, demo records, and temporary filenames often need a quick string of random characters. The random string generator creates an alphanumeric string of your chosen length with one click.
Generation rules
- Character set:
a-z, A-Z, and 0-9, for 62 possible characters. - The first character is always a letter, which is useful when an identifier must not start with a digit.
- Length:an integer from 1 to 10,000. The page defaults to 10.
How to generate a string
- Open Random String Generator.
- Enter the required length. Invalid values display a message and disable Generate until corrected.
- Click Generate to display the result.
- Click Copy to ClipBoard.
Useful scenarios
- Random usernames or order identifiers in unit and API tests.
- Temporary DOM IDs or identifiers during frontend development. For React keys, generate a value once per item and keep it stable rather than regenerating it on every render.
- Placeholder values in demos.
- Filename or directory suffixes to reduce naming collisions.
- Long strings for checking input limits and database field lengths.
Random generation does not guarantee uniqueness. If collisions matter, check for duplicates or use an identifier system appropriate to your application.
Length and the number of combinations
With 62 available characters, each additional position multiplies the number of possible strings by 62. If all positions could use every character, the approximate counts would be:
- 6 characters: 5.7 × 10¹⁰.
- 10 characters: 8.4 × 10¹⁷.
- 16 characters: 4.8 × 10²⁸.
- 32 characters: 2.3 × 10⁵⁷.
Because the first position is restricted to 52 letters, this tool's actual count is 52 × 62^(length - 1), slightly lower than those values. For small sets of ordinary test data, 10–16 characters is usually a practical starting point.
Do not use it for passwords or secret keys
The tool uses the browser's ordinary Math.random() generator. It is intended for convenient test data rather than cryptographic randomness.
- Do not use its output as a login password, API key, encryption key, or authentication token.
- For those purposes, use a password manager or a cryptographically secure random API, such as browser
crypto.getRandomValues or Node.js crypto.randomBytes.
